Data and Personal Privacy
Christine Hertzog (Moderator) Smart Grid Library
Ward Pyles Southern Company
Lee Tien Electronic Frontier Foundation
Jennifer Urban UC-Berkeley School of Law
Just as cyber security is vital for utilities, so is personal privacy for consumers. At face value, the Smart Grid offers a better world for all, but with access to an unprecedented amount of personal data, the potential for abuse is just as real as the benefits when managed responsibly. Many legal and ethical issues surround this topic, and for Smart Grid to ultimately succeed, utilities must earn and keep the trust of consumers. This panel examines a host of privacy topics, and you will very likely come away from this having learned something new and important about what is at stake here.

Adding mobile broadband to Smart Home applications brings an even more powerful connection between the utility and consumers. To make these a reality, however, many issues around wireless standards ZigBee, ZWave, 6loWPAN, etc., device interoperability and security need to be addressed. While the prospect of turning down the air conditioner from your smart phone is enticing, the possibilities are much richer, and these will be explored on this panel as well as the various challenges involved.

Investment scenarios in Smart Grid are challenging to evaluate, but the field becomes more attractive when other tangents are included, such as green IT, renewable energy, PHEVs and HAN. While most stimulus funding went into safe investments like smart meters, savvy VCs are now looking beyond this. Our panel of VCs and investment professionals will share their views on how this space compares to other green/clean sectors as well as what new companies must do to succeed in Smart Grid.
